"Synopsis"

Know Thyself introduces the existence of a rare and supernatural people called “Caretakers” who are born to act as the agents of creation and manipulate destiny to keep existence flowing successfully, rather than spiraling into complete annihilation.  The book begins with the account of “Guiding Caretaker” MILES DEAN’s efforts to recruit a reluctant apprentice, LUZCIEL.  Toward that end, Miles tells her his own story, which begins with the turbulent life of young Miles, filled with bizarre dreams taking place among creatures that never existed in the history of Earth.  Odd perceptions and experiences throughout his upbringing drive him to become reclusive, and then to venture out on the road.  Miles is a fortunate drifter, however, since he is always able to be in the right place at the right time to find employment to sustain him.  He does this by the guidance of deep, anomalous instincts that come from the center of his mind.

Eventually those instincts lead Miles to the tiny town of Elysian, Texas, where he is drawn to answer a “For Rent” posting for a cabin deep in the woods.  When he arrives at the cabin Miles is amazed to see a vortex of swirling energy in the sky.  Miles does not know the nature of this phenomenon, but he feels his drifting has ended.

Circumstances then lead Miles to another remote location, an antique shop, “World Antiques & Restoration,” tucked behind the tree-line of a rural highway.  There he meets the antique dealer, OLIVER CRUCIAS.  A closer inspection of Oliver’s collection reveals that he is no ordinary antique dealer.  Many items seem unearthly.  Miles feels as though he knows Oliver, but when Oliver reveals that they both belong to the supernatural race of “Caretakers,” Miles cannot accept this truth, and he flees.

Oliver, however, is a much more powerful Caretaker, a “Guiding Caretaker” for whom Miles is to be an apprentice, and he has placed items into Miles’s future that make him contemplate this question:  “Are you following the Indian diplomat or Roland Dannershaw?” Recalling the stories of these individuals from his past, Miles realizes he needs to return to Oliver and find out more about the meaning of being a Caretaker.

When Miles returns to the antique shop, a veil has been lifted from his eyes.  In his enlightened state, he is now able to see that a basement room below the antique shop descends into a cave that houses a “Caretaker Shrine,” one of eighty shrines on Earth.  Miles’s Caretaker training takes place in and around this shrine.

Through his training, Miles learns about his special powers that allow him to embrace the energy of the world, to read people and to sense the past and future.  He learns about the ways and the history of the Caretakers and also that Earth is not alone in the universe; it is part of a macrocosmic “Circle” of worlds, and Caretakers are born with a self on each one.  Miles realizes the dreams from his past were flashes of those other selves preparing him, because when his training is completed, his consciousness (“mind’s eye”) will embark on an “Apprenticeship Journey” to all of those worlds.  On that journey, he and Oliver will undertake “Caretaker Quests” to preserve creation and overcome the efforts of creation’s greatest enemies, the “Breakers,” who seek to destroy creation.  This effort has become more challenging in recent generations because Caretaker Lines have been disappearing, and with fewer Caretakers, a “Lifedrain Scenario,” the end of all that exists, is more likely.

Miles learns about Breakers not only by reflecting on the ones from his past but also by encountering Breakers in the present.  One almost causes Miles’s death.

Miles reflects on the way he learned of Oliver’s miraculous abilities, for instance, the way that Oliver used a power called “Lovespark” to prepare the future for Miles to rent the cabin under the swirling spot in the heavens.  The swirling spot turns out to be Miles’s initial access to the creative energy, and he uses it to develop his Caretaker Consciousness.  Miles’s Caretaker training is also enhanced by the arrival of MAHINA KOROI, a more advanced Caretaker than Oliver who has just completed a Caretaker Quest on Earth.  Mahina, in her human form, is a tiny Polynesian woman, but her “Homeworld” is two worlds away.  She is near the end of her “Guiding Journey,” and so Mahina is instructive to both Oliver and Miles.

After overcoming several hurdles, Miles is finally ready to embark on his Apprenticeship Journey around the Great Circle of Worlds and to face the Caretaker Quests the journey will require.  Miles knows his stories from the other worlds must convince his reader, Luzciel, to accept her calling as the next “Apprentice Caretaker,” but her apathy is part of a larger campaign by the Breakers, who in this latest generation have a new weapon that allows them to impact the fabric of reality like never before.  And if Miles fails to recruit Luzciel, existence cannot be sustained.
